Her opposition led her to volunteer to serve as director of the humanitarian programs of the American Friends Service Committee (the Quakers) in Vietnam from 1970 to 1973. In this capacity, she oversaw a rehabilitation center for Vietnamese war victims in Quang Ngai province in South Vietnam.
